The Hotelschool Gent carries in its name the uniqueness of our school: it is a school for technical and vocational education in the field of food studies, where together we give shape to the concepts of ‘hospitality’ and ‘master of taste’. As a school, we provide the following fields of study:
- Bread and Pastry/Bakery (and Confectionery/Chocolate Processing) – Technical and vocational level
- Catering/Restaurant/Hotel – Technical level
- Restaurant and Kitchen – Vocational level
- Industrial Kitchen – Vocational level
‘Hospitality’ is about dealing with customers in a pleasant and polite way. Both the Hotel and Restaurant and Kitchen programmes teach students the tricks of the trade: receiving and serving customers in an impeccable manner, offering culinary excellence and providing the correct information, and working together with colleagues as a well-oiled team. We see a neat appearance and language, together with achieving of a sound theoretical knowledge and excellent workmanship, as priorities in our education project.
In our Bread and Pastery / Chocolate Processing courses we keep craftsmanship as well as future developments as a focal point. While teaching how to craft bread, pastries and chocolate by hand, we also make students familiar with a wide range of industrial equipment and tools.
Practice is combined with general subjects. These provide the necessary knowledge to function in society as venturous and independent young adults. We also focus on enriching practical lessons with additional knowledge and skills, such as using specific terminology in both French and English, and working on entrepreneurial skills.
All this requires a commitment from our students that should not be underestimated. Every course at the Hotelschool Ghent guarantees an exciting and varied education, in which young people are formed into talented professionals, ready to take on the challenges of today's society and job market. Within the Flemish educational landscape, Spermalie Brugge has been a resounding name and established name for over 70 years when it comes to professional training courses focusing on hospitality and customer-oriented services. Our school offers a fine range of specific practical training within the hospitality, travel, leisure, communication and media sector.
At Spermalie, we make it together. The school team, formed by teachers, educators, care coaches, support staff and management, guides the students in their learning and personal development process.

We offer secondary education. Students can start in our school after primary school. The youngest students are 12. They follow the first degree A. Students who didn’t get their primary school certificate, start in the first degree B.
From the second degree on we offer Horeca, Tourism and Language and Communication in technical education. These students can go to college for a bachelor degree.
In vocational education we offer Restaurant and Kitchen and Reception.
Students who went through secondary school and obtained their degree can start to work or follow a 7th specialisation year. We organise cook (chef) and hotel receptionist. These students can also choose to take a graduate programme.
